Local day camps made a great summer for cancer patients families

Thanks to local summer camps, a group of children whose caregivers are being treated for cancer at Windham Hospital were given free admission to camp this summer.

Working with the hospital’s Cancer Navigation Program, Holiday Hill Day Camp in Mansfield, CT and the Channel 3 Kids Camp in Andover, CT provided full admission to the children – and by doing so, also gave some rest to the adults who are experiencing the physical and emotional stress caused by a cancer diagnosis.

In addition, the Town of Coventry Parks and Recreation Camp and Camp Asto Wamah in Columbia, CT each offered free spaces for children of cancer patients.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, joined by Lt Gov. Nancy Wyman, CT State Department on Aging Commissioner Edith Prague and members of the General Assembly’s Aging Committee, held a ceremonial bill signing July 10 for Public Act 13-125, An Act Concerning the Department on Aging.

Prague stepped down in May 2012 as State Senator for the 19th District after serving in office for 18 years. That district serves Columbia, Franklin, Hebron, Lebanon, Ledyard, Lisbon, Marlborough, Montville, Norwich and Sprague.

Prague’s passion has been protecting the rights and promoting the dignity of senior citizens. She was picked by Gov. Malloy in March 2013 to head a new Department on Aging.

The Douglas Library Children’s Department kicks off the 2013 Summer Reading program with Bubbleology – The Secret Life of Bubbles, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25 in the library’s Community Room.

Keith Michael Johnson will explore the world of bubbles – bubble sculptures (some life-sized), smoke-filled bubbles, spinning bubbles, and more.

Admission is free and the program is open to the public (children must be accompanied by an adult).

The Church of the Holy Family in Hebron, CT on Route 85 (185 Church St.) sponsors its 13th annual Padre’s Run on Sunday, June 30.

The Church of the Holy Family in Hebron, CT on Route 85 (185 Church St.) sponsors its 13th annual Padre’s Run on Sunday, June 30. The event will benefit The Fidelco Guide Dog program that partners a service dog with a returning wounded U.S. soldier.

Registration in the church hall is from 9 to 11 a.m.

There will be a memorial Mass at 9:30 a.m., followed by a blessing of the bikes and then the motorcycle “poker” run.

Riders return to the church for food, live music performed by Arizona Made and a raffle.

The health screenings on June 20 in Hebron include taking blood pressure measurements, cholesterol and blood glucose screenings, foot care and removal of ear wax.

On Thursday, June 20 VNA East will offer health screenings for adults from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.  at the Russell Mercier Senior Center at 14 Stonecroft Drive in Hebron.

This includes taking blood pressure measurements, cholesterol and blood glucose screenings, information about foot care and removal of ear wax.

The blood pressure measurement is free, but other services have a small fee.

Staff from the Town of Hebron assessor’s office will be conducting field inspects now through July 31, 2013. Anyone who has taken out a building permit since Oct. 1, 2012 or who has an outstanding building permit for unfinished construction can expect an in-person inspection.

They are:
8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays
8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays
